During the winter period, the non-governmental organisation Choose Love raises vital funds to support refugees and displaced people through freezing cold temperatures. To support such efforts, in December it will be holding a pop-up shop in New York’s Rockefeller Centre, where you can buy supplies and services, like hot food, shelter, heating fuel and resources to search and rescue, that go directly to people across the world – in your name, or in the name of a loved one. It’s the perfect alternative if you’re struggling to find a gift for someone, or want to find a way of gifting more consciously this Christmas.

Since 2015 Choose Love has been fighting for a world in which displaced communities can find a home and thrive. It has collaborated with 259 communities organisations across the globe and raised more than $100 million. The pop-up shop is the first of its kind, allowing you to easily send essentials straight to refugees and displaced people; the most needed items are labelled with a heart and there will also be branded merchandise on sale which raises money for the project as a whole.

The pop-up will take place at Rink Level in the Rockefeller centre from 1-31 December. At the shop there will also be a whole host of activations, events, DJ takeovers, festive activities and even some celebrities helping out at the tills. Past events have seen Annie Mac DJing and Louis Theroux lending a helping hand.

It’s Nice That has worked closely alongside Choose Love to put on two workshops led by creatives. They will also take place at the pop-up and be hosted by our new editor-at-large in New York, Elizabeth Goodspeed. Kicking thing off on 18 December is a workshop run by designer Sun Ho Lee; Sun Ho uses her work to highlight the experiences of “cultural inbetweeners”, especially Asian immigrants in the US. Her publication, Is This a Typo? explores the regularity with which immigrant names are misspelt. On 19 December there will be a workshop from Edel Rodriguez, an artist, illustrator and former art director at Time magazine, who has used his work to critique politics, especially the term of Donald Trump. Both creatives have also been commissioned to create a limited edition print that will be sold at the pop-up, with all funds raised going to Choose Love.

Keep up to date with the event and programming via Choose Love’s website and social media accounts.
