Alongside the mainstream, a branch of ‘underground’ comic production proliferated in the 1960s and 70s. Often self-published and produced with a low budget, such comics were defined by DIY aesthetics, and sketchy illustrations. With this in mind, it’s not hard to see how illustrator Junwoo Park sees such publications as his biggest inspiration; his works feature scenes of comedic, slapstick violence and speech bubbles presenting nonsensical interactions all realised in a trademark grainy, vintage finish.
Despite their hand-drawn feel, Junwoo’s illustrations are actually digital, predominantly using Procreate on his iPad. To keep himself on his toes, Junwoo also tries to constantly change his focus, often exploring “disorderly or funny forms”. Such an approach leads Junwoo to experiment with styles. And, while he has recognisable themes and characters, different stylistic choices – like airbrush and diverse colour palettes often rear their heads – creating a portfolio that takes his viewer on an unpredictable yet enjoyable visual journey.
